A commercial driver, Paul Anieke, has been beaten up by a naval officer, identified simply as Sunday, at Banana bus stop in the Ajegunle area of Lagos State.

Our correspondent learnt that Sunday, who was on mufti, angrily alighted from his car with a whip and repeatedly flogged the 36-year-old driver.
It was also learnt that the officer hit the victim in the eyes with fist blows after the flogging. The driver reportedly slumped and was later rushed to the Ajeromi General Hospital.
An angry mob was said to have descended on Sunday.
An eyewitness, Jamiu Ismail, condemned the officer’s action, saying Enugu-born Sunday was not at fault.
He said, “The officer just harassed the driver. The man (Anieke) parked very well, waiting for passengers, only for him (Sunday) to say he was blocking the road.
“The man begged the naval guy, but he refused. He wanted to run away when the driver collapsed, but we did not allow him. Some people even beat him up.”
A shopowner in the area, who identified herself only as Jibola, described Anieke as a descent man.
“I was surprised when I got to the scene and discovered it was him. He is a well-behaved person and very friendly. Since he had been shuttling this area, nobody has ever accused him of reckless driving,” she said.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro, the victim said he received four drips at the hospital.
He added that the incident was reported at the Ajeromi Police Station.
He said, “It was terrible, but I thank God for my life. I was surprised when I woke up and saw my wife and relatives beside me in the hospital.
“My conductor reported at the police station and two policemen came to the hospital. They met the officer here, but he begged for settlement and was later freed. He paid my hospital bill.”
The Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Police Command, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, said the incident was not reported at any station.
“I have contacted Ajeromi Police Station, but the DPO said there was no case like that before him,” he said.
The Western Naval Command, through its spokesperson, Lieutenant Abdulsalam Sanni, disowned Sunday, claiming that he was an impostor.
Sanni said, “It has not yet been established that the alleged person is a naval personnel as anybody could claim to be one, especially nowadays when we have so many impostors going about wearing all kinds of uniforms.
“Anybody that can identify him can provide the navy with the information.
“The Nigerian Navy will sanction any erring personnel indulging in this unruly behaviour.
