Fenerbahce drops Joseph Yobo

Turkish Super Lig club, Fenerbahce, announced yesterday Friday August 29th that they have released Nigeria defender Joseph Yobo. Fenerbahce announced on their official website that due to restriction in the number of foreign players, the club and Yobo had to part ways. Continue....

General Manager, Climate Services, Nigerian Metrological Agency, Mr. Joseph Alozie, on Friday said that the heavy rainfall recorded since the beginning of August would increase farm yields in 2014.

Alozie made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.

He said that the new rainfall pattern being witnessed would assist farmers to replant seedlings of short duration and boost their harvest. Continue....

Senegal’s health ministry has confirmed a first case of Ebola, making it the fifth West African country to be affected by the outbreak.

Health Minister Awa Marie Coll Seck told reporters on Friday that a young man from Guinea was confirmed to have contracted the virus.

Police parade carpenter for concealing gun in a loaf of bread

The Abia State Police Command has paraded a suspected robber, Justice Onyebuchi, 22, a native of Amayi Umuokwu community of the state, for allegedly concealing a locally made short gun and two live cartridges in a long loaf of bread .

According to Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Adamu, the suspect was arrested on August 10, 2014 by eagle-eyed policemen during a stop-and-search operation at Umuikaa- Omoba Road in Isislangwa North council in an Owerri, Imo State – bound commercial vehicle . Continue...

The Confederation of African Football has declared there will be no further changes to September’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers despite some relocation requests over Ebola fears.

It stated on its website: “Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia remain the only countries required to relocate their fixtures to neutral territories as a result of the situation of the Ebola virus.”

The Federal Government has lifted the suspension of Residency Training Programme in all federal hospitals with effect from Thursday, August 28, 2014 while the ongoing appraisal of the programme continues.

Bayern Munich have confirmed the signing of Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso for an estimated €10 million.

Malaysia Airlines is to cut 6,000 staff as part of recovery plan after being hit by two disasters this year.

The reduction in staff numbers represents around 30 per cent of its workforce of 20,000.

The Catholic Church on Thursday complained that Boko Haram insurgents had taken over the parish church house as well as houses of Christians in Madagali, Adamawa State.

Madagali town is the headquarters of the Madagali Local Government Area and it shares border with Borno State. It is also the closest town to Gwoza, the town that Boko Haram has already annexed.

The church, in an electronic press statement by the Director, Catholic Social Communications in-charge of the Maiduguri Diocese, Rev. Fr. Gideon Obasogie, said that though the members of Boko Haram had been known not to discriminate in their attacks, it however seemed that Christians and Christian institutions had been at the receiving end of the sect’s mayhem. The World Health Organisation has raised fresh alarm that over 20,000 people are at risk of contracting the Ebola Virus Disease going by the exponential effect of the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

The WHO in a terse statement in Geneva on Thursday stated that so far, 1,552 persons have died of Ebola and called on various governments to deploy strategies towards containing the deadly disease.

It noted that over 120 health care workers have died in the Ebola outbreak, and twice that number have been infected. Continue...

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo won UEFA’s Best Player in Europe Award ahead of Bayern Munich pair Manuel Neuer and Arjen Robben.

Portugal captain Ronaldo, 29, scored a record 17 goals to help Madrid win the Champions League last season.

THE police in Niger State on Thursday stopped a rally by members of the All Progressives Congress. The rally had been meant to boost the chances of the APC candidate, David Umaru, in the Niger-East senatorial bye-election.

Members of the APC were locked out of the Minna Polo ground venue of the rally by men of the Niger State police command, who stormed the venue in 10 Toyota Hilux vans.

Spokesman for the state APC, Jonathan Vatsa, said the APC had applied to use the venue on August 24 but that they were denied because PDP chose the same time. Continue...

A First Republic Minister of Information, Chief Edwin Clark, has told the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party not to grant waiver to a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to contest the party’s primary for Adamawa governorship election.

Clark, who spoke at a press conference at his residence in Abuja on Thursday, said Ribadu had no political value and that the enemies of President Goodluck Jonathan were the sponsors of the ex-boss of EFCC. Continue....

Lack of electricity threatens Nigeria’s destiny – Minister

The common destiny of Nigerians is being threatened by the lack of electricity, the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, has said.

Nebo stated that with the increasing population in the country, there was the need for reinforcement of forces to avert the looming threat to Nigeria’s future as a result of inadequate power supply.

The minister said the recent disqualification of some students by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board over deficiencies in Information and Communication Technology would not have occurred if there was adequate electricity supply to rural dwellers. Continue...

Unknown gunmen at about 5.20 this morning August 28th attacked an Army camp manned by six armed soldiers at Wunti -Dada, a suburb of Bauchi state, killing the commander of the camp and a soldier.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has sealed off seven shops and confiscated contraband food products worth millions of Naira in Kano.

The NAFDAC Assistant Director (Enforcement), Mr. Shaba Mohammed, disclosed this in Kano on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

Samuel Eto’o has rubbished talk of a rift with Jose Mourinho as he prepares for the possibility of an Everton debut against his old boss, Sky Sports reports.

Eto’o was part of Mourinho’s Champions League-winning side at Inter Milan and came to England a year ago to rejoin the Portuguese at Chelsea.

The global body on Wednesday noted that despite the ban on smoking in public places, tobacco smoking remained an epidemic that is increasing cases of killer diseases such as stroke, liver and lung cancer.

A 57-year-old man, Lawrence Isidor, has been remanded for two weeks after he was alleged to have stolen a mosquito net belonging to one Mrs. Gracious Odo, a resident on Marble Street, Happy Land Estate in the Ajah area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that the defendant slapped the woman when she accused him of stealing the net.

The defendant was on August 11, arraigned by the police before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court , on two counts of stealing and assault -─ to which he pleaded not guilty. Continue...

Jonathan urged to name hospital after Late Adadevoh

A former House of Representatives member, Otunba Dino Melaye has urged President Goodluck Jonathan, to name a Federal Government owned hospital after the late Ameyo Adadevoh because of her gallant role in helping to curtail the spread of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria.

Adadevoh, a senior consultant at the First Consultant Hospital, Obalende Lagos, was said to have prevented the Liberian/American Patrick Sawyer from running out of the hospital after after he tested positive to the virus. Continue....

Gunmen kidnapped two-year-old girl in Akwa Ibom

Three unknown gunmen have abducted a two-year-old girl, Patience Essiet, in Ukat Ubium, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.

The mother of the abducted girl, Ms. Affiong Tommy, 20, said the gunmen, who also brandished machetes, broke into the room through the back door around 4am on Wednesday. Continue..
