In recognition of their services to the country through sports, the federal government, Tuesday honoured some Nigerians who have distinguished themselves in the sector by naming streets in some areas of the Federal Capital Territory after them.
The sportsmen and women who were listed among the over 182 eminent Nigerians and accomplished Africans included the late Super Eagles striker, Rashidi Yekini who was honoured for his ability to have been the first Nigerian to score a FIFA World Cup goal at the USA ’94 edition of the championship. Also on the list was former Super Eagles assistant coach, Daniel Amokachi for his feat of been the youngest Nigerian player to feature at the African cup of Nations, as well as police woman Chioma Ajunwa Opara who was the first Nigerian to win an Olympics gold medal.
The honours list also had late international wrestler, Mike Okpala also known as Power Mike as well as Dick Tiger Ihetu who was the first Nigerian to win a world boxing championship.
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed who bestowed the honours on behalf of the federal government said that the major streets in Asokoro Extension, Guzape, Wupa, Wuye and Maitama Extension districts as well as expressways and roads would be renamed in honour of President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice President Namadi Sambo, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President, late Dr. Chuba Okadigbo, former Speaker of House of Representatives and Katsina State Governor-elect, Hon. Aminu Bello Masari, former Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Dahiru Mustapha as well as business magnets, Aliko Dangote and Femi Otedola amongst others.
