Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State on Wednesday commended the Nigeria Police for its contributions to the reduction of crime in the state.
Oshiomhole described the provision of adequate security of lives and property by relevant security agencies as a pre-condition for social, political, economic and development in the country.
The Governor, who made this known when he received the new Assistant Inspector-General of Police ( Zone 5), Musa Daura, at the Government House, Benin, assured the agency of his administration’s continuous support and cooperation in maintaining in the state. Continue...
He said that over the years, more Nigerians had come to recognise that without security, “there can be no order and there can be no peace.”
Oshiomhole said, “We appreciate that nothing is possible without security. Maybe in the distant past, not many Nigerians understood the issue of security as something that is a precondition for every other thing you want to do.
“So it is clear that we all need to contribute our quota in supporting security forces to maintain law and order in our state. In any way and any matter you want to consult with us, feel free and if we have any, we will not hesitate to reach out to you.”
He said that although Edo State had had its “fair share” of crime, a large amount of the menace had been dealt with by the police.
“We have had our fair share of crime and criminality but we also have enough evidence that criminals have paid heavy tolls as a result of the efforts of the Police and other security agencies.
“Let me use this opportunity to also thank the Commissioner of Police as well as his officers and men for their contributions in making Edo a relatively safer place, compared to other South-South states.”
While congratulating the New AIG on his recent posting to Edo State, Oshiomhole disclosed that men of the agency who had served as AIG’s and CP’s left the state with higher ranks, stressing his belief the new AIG would have a successful stay in Edo State.
“I have no doubt in my mind that the great people of Edo State definitely will enjoy the assistance of your friendship and I want to assure you as fellow citizen who shares same commitment for a better Nigeria that we will do everything to make your stay here comfortable,” he said.
Earlier, the new AIG, while commending the state government for its cooperation in the management of security, assured the governor that the agency would not relent in making the state a place of peace.
AIG Daura said, “Before coming here, I was briefed by the CP on how you have assisted the Security Agencies generally in fighting crime in the state. There is no way we can achieve peace and order without the assistance and cooperation of the State Government.
“You have done a lot and I have no doubt in my mind that you will continue. I was going round this week and I saw a lot of achievements made during your regime and I have no doubt that you are equal to the task.”
