The Federal Government on Friday refuted statements alleging that the use of mobile phones can cause cancer.
The government’s rebuttal was prompted by a statement circulating in some sections of the media claiming that the use of mobile phones can cause cancer.
The Minister of Communication Technology, Dr. Omobola Johnson, disclosed that there were no proven health hazards resulting from the use of mobile phones or proximity to telecommunications installations for now that could pose a risk to human health.
Johnson, in a statement issued by her Special Assistant on Media, Efem Nkanga, described the statement as one that was not backed by proven scientific analysis.
She said the statement was a wrong representation of the position of her ministry and enjoined Nigerians to disregard the caution on the use of mobile phones.
According to her, various researches conducted by international organisations on the safety of mobile phones use till date remained inconclusive
She stressed that until results of a definitive and conclusive research were obtained with zero doubts on the safety of cell phone use, Nigerians can safely continue using their mobile phones.
Citing the World Health Organisation, in a publication in September 2013, Johnson, according to the statement, said, “Based on mixed epidemiological evidence on humans regarding an association between exposure to RF radiation from wireless phones and head cancers (glioma and acoustic neuroma), RF fields have been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as possibly carcinogenic to humans
