he Nigeria Police says a Boko Haram suspect, self-styled ‘Chief Butcher’ of the sect, Mohammed Zakari, arrested by it in Balmo forest in Bauchi, did not escape from custody.
The suspect was shown to some newsmen in one of the police facilities in the FCT on Wednesday by the force spokesman, ACP Frank Mba.
Mba said, “For the past few days, there has been very strong rumour that the suspect, Zakari had escaped from custody.
“It is primarily in response to that (rumour of escape) that we have decided to bring the suspect out to interact with you (newsmen).
“This is in the best culture of transparency of policing operations; you have seen him for yourselves.
“There is no gainsaying now that the suspect who has been alleged to have escaped is in our facility.”
Zakari also told journalists that he joined the sect in 2012, and belonged to a five-man gang of the sect, who specialised in “slaughtering human beings.”
The suspect, who spoke through an interpreter, named the other four members of the slaughtering team as Hassan, Garba, Mohammed and Isa now at large.
Zakari explained, “My real name is Mohammed Zakari, I am also known as Hardu. I am 30 years old, I hail from Bauchi.
“My duty is to slaughter human beings; the duty of the others is to tie the victims whenever we get one.
“I have slaughtered five persons, it takes me only two minute to slaughter a victim after being tied by other members of the gang.”
It would be recalled that Zakari, described by the police as “high profile member” of the sect, was arrested on July 12, while he was fleeing the forest.
The police alleged that he participated in the slaughter of seven people, including women and children.
