Synagogue: Police set up team to probe building collapse

Police authorities, over the week, constituted a team of detectives to carry out thorough investigation into the circumstances which led to the collapse of a six-storey building within the premises of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, SCOAN.

Reliable police sources said the team is led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of one of the Area Commands in the state.This was even as the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has put the official figure of the death toll at 131.Vanguard gathered that the police team which had already swung into action, would in the course of the investigation, drill Prophet Joshua extensively, on the issue of a low-flying aeroplane which he alleged, had hovered severally around the building before its collapse. Osita Iheme popularly known as PawPaw recently published a 110-paged inspirational book with 101 quotes titled 'Inspired 101'. He spoke recently on why he published the book and what he intends to do with it..
"I read a lot of books, so I got inspired by some of these books and also some societal challenges that affected me personally. Inspired 101 is basically a compilation of inspirational/motivational quotes. It took me about two years to put this together. Nigeria army back-tracks on Chibok schoolgirls' release

Nigeria's military has retracted its statement that some of the schoolgirls abducted from Chibok town in April by Islamist militants had been freed.

Army spokesman Major General Chris Olukolade says that there were girls in military custody, but not those from Chibok as originally thought.

More than 200 girls were seized by Boko Haram fighters from a boarding school in the north-eastern Borno state. It caused worldwide outrage and sparked a social media campaign. Continue...

Bent iPhone claims put Apple under pressure to respond

 

Experts are divided over whether Apple should respond to claims that its new iPhone 6 handsets are prone to becoming bent when carried in trouser pockets.

Several members of the public have postedphotos to the Macrumors site that appear to show the problem. A reporter for the Geek.com news site also reported his phone had warped.

Other mobiles have bent in the past. And it is not yet clear if the new iPhones' aluminium shells make them particularly vulnerable. Continue..

Ogun police kill 37 robbers in nine months

The Ogun State commissioner of police, Mr. Ikemefuna Okoye, has said the command arrested 220 armed robbers and killed 37 others during shootouts with his men between January and September 2014.

The police boss, who spoke at the state police headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, during a parade of some suspected cultists and robbers, added that within the period under review, 48 guns, which included 10 AK-47 rifles, and 1,600 ammunition were recovered.

Okoye stated that 116 vehicles were recovered, while 92 suspected cultists were arrested.

Okoye said his men on Saturday arrested 31 suspected cultists who belonged to Eiye confraternity in a hotel in the Obantoko area of Abeokuta during their initiation. Continue....

Killers of Venezuelan beauty queen Monica Spear jailed

A court in Venezuela has sentenced three men to lengthy jail sentences for the killing of Venezuelan beauty queen Monica Spear in January.

The three had pleaded guilty. Spear, 29, and her British partner, Thomas Berry, were shot dead in January in front of their five-year-old daughter during a roadside robbery. UN figures suggest that Venezuela has the second-highest peacetime murder rate in the world, but the brutality of the crime shocked the country. Prosecutors said the three men were part of a larger gang which targeted motorists along a highway leading from Valencia to Puerto Cabello. Continue..

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has warned Sammy Ameobi time is running out for him to prove himself at St James’ Park, Skysports reports.

Ameobi has failed to nail down a regular place in the Newcastle side despite showing flashes of his potential for his hometown club since breaking into the first team three years ago.

I am saying this on many grounds. One, we have seen that the connection between him and the middle class and the masses of this country is unparalleled. He has a bond between the masses of this country and the middle class and that kind of bond generated 12 million votes in 2011 in a micro Congress for Progressive Change, a small CPC, now we have a broader political party – the APC, I think all we need to do is to compliment and supplement that 12 million votes instead of running the risk of the rancour, the bitterness of direct or indirect primaries, we have to avoid that rancour because our challengers and incumbent, the PDP, have already nominated President Goodluck Jonathan as its candidate for the 2015 Presidential election and he has already started campaigning. We don’t need to waste time. The few months left before a crucial election requires a challenger that the APC is, to hit the ground running with a candidate that will show the Nigerian people what we have to gazette. Continue..

Fayemi asks Jonathan, CJN, NBA to probe attack on judge

Ekiti Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mariam Aloma-Mukhtar, to probe the Monday’s attack on Justice Olusegun Ogunyemi of the Ekiti State High Court, Ado-Ekiti.

The Governor who visited the court on inspection called for the prosecution of those arrested in connection with the attack, describing it as “a sad day for democracy.”

He said, “For us as a state we are embarrassed because in four years we have done nothing but to respect the independence of our judiciary. We have protected the courts, we have ensured that we keep a distance even when judgments are against our government.  Former Governor of Abia state, Orji Uzor Kalu, now has the most expensive private jet in Nigeria. The jet, which is the latest edition of the Gulfstream G650, is said to be worth about N12billion and arrived the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos on Thursday September 18th from New York.
Described as the fastest civilian jet in the world, the PJ boasts of a basketball court, 8,000 statute-mile range, some of the most sophisticated avionics rivaling nearly anything in the sky and uses two Rolls Royce BR725 engines. The main price of the aircraft is put at $65 million but other charges could have raised it to $75m. According to Forbes, the Gulfstream G650 has an order book of 200 customers throughout the world.

Police raid hospital, rescue four pregnant ladies, baby

The Abia State Police Command has arrested two nurses and rescued four pregnant ladies, one of them with a two-year-old baby, during a raid at a hospital allegedly used as a baby factory.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Geoffrey Ogbonna , told PUNCH Metro that the police were still on the trail of the Medical Director of the hospital located at Ihie Umudem Isuochi in the Umunneochi Local Government Area of the state.

The PPRO, who stated that the yet-to-be-identified MD fled during the raid on the hospital, explained that the doctor and the nurses were using the hospital as shelter for young women with unwanted pregnancies. Continue...

Presidency - Why Adadevoh was excluded from national honours list

The Presidency has explained the reason why the late Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist, Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh, did not make the list of the 305 Nigerians who will receive national honours this year. Adadevoh was credited for halting a wider spread of the Ebola Virus Disease by restraining the Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer, who brought the Ebola Virus Disease to Nigeria.
