Gunmen have robbed the parents of another South African international football star, Sibusiso Vilakazi, while he was sleeping at their Johannesburg home, in an attack he claims was targeted at him.Police and the midfielder for the national team Bafana Bafana said the robbers held up his family at gunpoint at his parents’ house in Soweto township and stole an array of valuables.The attack shortly after midnight on Saturday came just under a week after national football captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was gunned down in what police said was a robbery that went “horribly wrong”.The burglars stormed in and asked for Vilakazi by name while he slept in a backyard room.“Those people knew what they wanted. A former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has said women are more reliable in politics than their male counterparts.

He said this on Wednesday when some national executive officers and members of the Nigeria Association of Women journalists visited him at his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta.

They presented him a Father of the Nation Award during the visit.

The Presidential Amnesty Office on Wednesday said it trained ex-militants abroad in order to imbibe in them the value of relating well with other cultures and people.

The Special Assistant on Media in the Office, Mr Daniel Alabrah, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Alabrah said the purpose of offshore training was to remove the ex-militants from the environment they were familiar with and expose them to other environments where they would mix with different races.

According to him, the arrangement is to help the ex-militants in the process of reintegrating with the larger society.

Oklahoma State Football team forward Courtney Dike has rejected the $7000 paid to her by the Nigeria Football Federation for participating at 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada saying the honour of playing for the country was enough reward for her.

The 19-year-old, who is the younger sister of Super Eagles forward Bright Dike, represented the country at the competition where she scored the fastest goal in the tournament’s history.

NFF Head of Competition Sanusi Mohammed told Sports Radio, Brila FM, that the player rejected the outstanding allowances accrued to her for representing the country at the 10-day tournament.

18 killed in Egypt school bus crash

Eighteen people were killed and 18 injured on Wednesday morning when a school bus hit a truck in Beheira governorate in the Nile Delta, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

A school bus carrying students from Kafr El-Dawar’s Al-Orman Hotel and Tourism high school, a private vehicle and a truck carrying wood collided on the Alexandria agricultural road near Abu Hummus town.

The deputy to the minister of interior for transportation told Ahram Arabic news website that the bus driver attempted to dodge a car only to hit another vehicle and the truck which led to the explosion of its gas tank.

However, a senior police official in Beheira said the collision unfolded after the truck rammed into the bus. Continue....

South Africa coach ‘Shakes’ Mashaba said Tuesday he will name a successor to slain captain Senzo Meyiwa on the eve of an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan.Meyiwa was gunned down on October 25 during an armed robbery at a house in a township 30 kilometres (19 miles) south east of Johannesburg.The 27-year-old goalkeeper captained the national team and Soweto-based club Orlando Pirates and had not conceded a goal in four Cup of Nations qualifiers.“I will decide who succeeds Senzo on the eve of the match,” Mashaba told reporters after naming a 26-man squad in Soweto for mid-November qualifiers against Sudan and Nigeria.Bafana Bafana (The Boys) host Sudan in Durban on November 15 before travelling to west Africa for a November 19 final-round clash against Nigeria. The nation currently needs a $14 billion annual investment in its infrastructure facilities, the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said.

Speaking at the Public Private Partnership, PPP, stakeholders’ workshop organized by the African Development Bank, AfDB, in Abuja, yesterday, she said the Federal Government could not afford the entire funding requirement, therefore, making private sector investment in infrastructure inevitable.

According to her, “To fund infrastructure, Nigeria needs about $14 billion every year, out of which $10 billion should come from the federal level. And this estimate is not comprehensive because it is likely to be higher when the total financial outlay needed to fund the Infrastructure Master plan is calculated. Continue....

Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson

A pro-democracy group, Niger Delta Youth Forum, has warned Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson against the imposition of candidates on the Peoples Democratic Party in the state.

The warning was contained in a letter on Tuesday sent by the group to the Governor over an alleged interference in the nomination process by the PDP in the existing eight local government areas of the state.

The group, in the letter signed by its National Coordinator, Mr. Mike Olomu, called on Dickson to stop the deliberate attempts by some state party leaders to hijack the elective process of the PDP and hide behind the facade of zoning of elective positions to disenfranchise some people and impose others on the people. FG to provide HIV drugs to private hospitals – FACA

The FCT Agency for the Control of AIDS has said that the Federal Government will provide private hospitals with HIV drugs under the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission programme.

The Programme Manager, Dr Uche Okoro, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Tuesday that the hospital staff would also be trained on how to capture the data for comprehensive HIV and AIDS services.
“This year, we are looking at 25 per cent HIV scale up in private centres; the government will provide HIV testing kits, drugs, registers and then train their staff on how to capture the data.”
Okoro said such measure would enhance the PMTCT services in the FCT as most pregnant women preferred to access the services offered by private hospitals. Continue...

We’ve been abandoned — Abuja bomb blast victims

Seven months after they were affected in the bomb explosions, which took place in the nation’s capital territory and other neighbouring towns, victims of these bomb attacks, yesterday, protested against alleged negligence by the Federal Government.The victims, who converged on the Millennium Park Fountain, venue of the #BringBackourGirls demonstrations, also claimed that they were abandoned in various hospitals, and left to foot the bills that had accumulated in the course of their treatments.Among the incidents that affected them are the dual bomb blasts at Nyanya in April, and others in Suleja, Niger State, as well as Emab Plaza in Wuse Zone II, Abuja.In a swift reaction, Secretary, Health and Human Services Secretariat of the FCTA, Dr. Ademola Onakomaiya, said: “There is a mix up here. What they are asking for is not healthcare, but empowerment because if we had not treated them, they will not be able to come here.”

Fashola - Jonathan has done nothing to merit second term

Lagos State Government, Babatunde Fashola has accused the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), which is anchoring the President’s re-election campaign, of “plotting to ensure that President Goodluck Jonathan returns to power through propagation of false claims, saying Jonathan has done nothing to merit a second term, describing hiss transformation agenda as a failure. Boko Haram invades Kogi prison, frees 143

The police and the Army have launched a manhunt for inmates of the Koton-Karfi Prison in Kogi State, who were set free by gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents.

There were about 145 inmates in the 80-year-old prison as of 10pm on Sunday when the gunmen gained entry into the prison by blowing up its iron bars with an improvised explosive device.

A male prison officer and an inmate were injured while another inmate was found dead after the attackers left. Continue..

Boko Haram suspected after suicide blast, prison break in Nigeria

A suicide bombing at a Shiite ceremony killed at least 15 people in northeastern Nigeria on Monday while 132 inmates were at large after a daring prison break.The attack in Potiskum, the commercial capital of Yobe state, came as Shia Muslims marked Ashura, the anniversary of the death of Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed.The prison break saw armed gunmen use dynamite to blast open the detention facility in central Kogi state late on Sunday, more than two years after Boko Haram launched an attack at the same facility.Meanwhile in Adamawa state, also northeast Nigeria, tens of thousands of people fled their homes to refugee camps after the militants seized control of the commercial hub of Mubi. A National Youth Service Corps member, Helen Bando, has been jailed for one year for attempting to travel to Indian with fake documents.

Convicted and sentenced alongside Helen and equally jailed for one year each are Samuel Obiakor and Segun Alimi, who aided and abetted the first convict in commiting the crime.

Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye, while handing down the sentence on Monday, said the convicts deserved their punishment notwithstanding their plea bargain because such cases were becoming rampant.

The judge noted that it was the likes of the convicts, who usually brings the name of the nation into disrepute and destroy the chances of other Nigerians with legitimate intentions to travel out.

Former Nigeria midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has said the return of Villarreal forward Ikechukwu Uche to the Super Eagles will boost the team’s attack.

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi on Friday named Uche, who has not played for the country for nearly two years, in his 25-man squad for the Morocco 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Congo in and South Africa.

The Eagles, who are third in the Morocco 2015 Group A qualifying table on four points, face Congo, who beat Nigeria 3-2 in the first leg in Calabar on September 6, in the reverse fixture in Pointe Noire on November 15. The Eagles host South Africa in Uyo on November 19.

Skye Bank Plc says it has announced the full payment of the 80 per cent balance of its purchase price for Mainstreet Bank.

This is in fulfilment of the major requirement for its acquisition of 100 per cent shares of the bank from the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria.

The last tranche of the money for the acquisition was paid to AMCON on Friday, October 31 ahead of the November 3 deadline, the bank said in a statement.

The 80 per cent balance payment was made to AMCON in fulfilment of the share sale and purchase agreement earlier signed by both AMCON and Skye Bank.

Skye Bank had on October 9, 2014, paid the mandatory deposit of 20 per cent for the acquisition of Mainstreet Bank, with a pledge to complete the 80 per cent balance payment within the agreed time frame. Continue..

At least 60 people were killed and more than 110 were wounded Sunday in a Lahore, Pakistan, suicide blast near the country’s border with India, police said.

A suicide bomber detonated his vest after a daily parade at the Wagah border crossing, police said. It appeared the bomber entered the parade area as people were leaving and set off an explosive vest near a checkpoint, police said.

Spokesmen for two groups linked to the Pakistani Taliban — Jundallah and Jamaat-ul-Ahrar — separately claimed responsibility for the bombing, with the spokesman for the latter, Ehsanullah Ehsan, calling the Jundallah claim “baseless.” Ehsan’s statement promised more attacks.

“We will soon release the video of this attack,” the statement said. “This attack is the revenge of the killing of those innocent people who have been killed by Pakistan Army, particularly of those who have been killed in North Waziristan.” Continue.

A barman, Simeon Tenebe, who works in a hotel around Ojodu, Lagos was badly injured ‎during an unprovoked attack by a customer who stabbed him with a bottle because he was allegedly starring at the customer and his girlfriend who he came to drink with.

According to Punch, Kelvin Friday and his girlfriend, were hanging out in the hotel around 6pm on October 21, when it happened. The victim, claimed he was thinking about something he had discussed with his sister earlier in the day when the customer came up to him, saying that he was rudely starring at them and smashed his head with the bottle of beer he was drinking. Leading cement manufacturer, Dangote Cement Plc has announced drastic reduction of the prices of one of its major product - cement - across the country.

The new price announced by the Group MD/CEO of Dangote Cement, Mr. Devakumar Edwin, pegged the Dangote 32.5 cement grade at N1,000 per 50 kg bag, while the higher 42.5 grade would sell for N1,150 per bag.

A statement by the company at the end of a management meeting said, however, that the new prices were exclusive of the Value Added Tax, VAT, representing about 40 per cent discount on the prevailing market price of the product currently sold for N1,700 irrespective of the grade, across the country. SA goal keeper shot dead at girlfriend's house laid to rest

27 year old South Africa national team captain and goal keeper Senzo Meyiwa, who was shot dead at his girlfriend's home by unknown gunmen last Sunday October 25th, was laid to rest today November 1st at the Heroes Acre Chesterfield cemetery - an honor that is usually reserved for outstanding figures from the struggle against apartheid.

The Nigerian Army has retired 15 generals from the Nigerian Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (NASEME) Auchi, Edo State, from active service. Among the 15, are 10 brigadier-generals while the remaining five are major-generals.

The names of the major-generals are:

Edem Ekwo, Thompson Oliomoghe, Richard Maduegbunam, Friday Airende and Abass Adekanye, while the brigadier generals include Idi Adamu, Patrick Oviaghase, Samuel Ayo, Peter Aremu, Jacob Amao, Joshua Ibilaye, Ibrahim Alawode, Samuel Adesogan, Chukwuka Ani and Abel Okpeki.

Assemblies of God Church sacks general superintendent

The Assemblies of God Church has announced the excommunication of its past General Superintendent, Rev. Paul Emeka, from the church

But reacting to the development, Emeka said the action was a “coup.”

While announcing the removal of its spiritual leader’s dismissal from the ministry with his pastoral certificate withdrawn, the church also announced the emergence of Rev. Chidi Okoroafor as the new General Superintendent of the church.

He was elected alongside three other principal officials and fifteen zonal representatives to form the new Executive Council of the church for the next four years. Continue...

Villarreal striker Ikechukwu Uche has made a sensational return to the national team after he was named in the 25-man squad to face Congo and South Africa in the Morocco 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers by Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi on Friday.

But Keshi, who also made a sensational comeback to the Super Eagles on Friday after he was sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation after guiding Nigeria to a 3-1 defeat of Sudan in their Morocco 2015 qualifier in Abuja on October 15, omitted in-form Seattle Sounders striker and on-loan Stoke City winger Victor Moses from the list. Spain-based Uche has been in the international wilderness for nearly two years after Keshi refused to invite the 30-year-old, who helped Nigeria win the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa last year.

The appointments of four management staff of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund were terminated on Friday by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

A brief statement by the Head, Press and External Relations, PTDF, Mr. Kalu Otisi, said the affected persons were managers and the termination directive was given by the ministry.

No reason was given for the sack, as Kalu refused to speak on the cause of the termination.

Obinna Anokwuru would have loved to celebrate his 35th birthday partying with family and friends on October 23, 2014, but the young man’s fate did not afford him such pleasure. In fact, only a few of his friends and family could wish him happy birthday: they seem not to have the emotional strength to wish him one.
