24 Hours after ceasefire: Boko Haram kills 18 in Borno

Barely 24 hours after the Federal Government and Boko Haram brokered a ceasefire deal on the Islamist group’s terror campaign in the North-east, an attack, suspected to have been carried by the sect, yesterday, left eight dead.

The attack took place around the hilly communities of Dzur in Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State.

In an earlier development, suspected Boko Haram insurgents, Friday evening, killed 10 persons in an attack in Malamfatori, the headquarters of Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State, bringing the number of people killed in the two attacks at the weekend to 18.Federal Government officials were, yesterday, unwilling to comment on the attacks amid the truce talks.However, one of the officials. ”Our attitude is simply wait and see.”Meanwhile, sources said that the alleged killing of the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, and the attendant effect on the operations of the group may have forced it to negotiate with government.It was equally learnt that President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election bid may have played a role in the latest efforts to resolve the Nigeria–Boko Haram conflict. Gen. Gowon - I wasn’t ready to be Head of State

A former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, yesterday, revealed that he was not ready to become the Nigerian leader after the July 1966 coup d’etat that caused the death of his predecessor, General Aguiyi Ironsi. Patience Jonathan donates food items to Kwara residents

Wife of the President, Mrs Patience Jonathan, has donated three lorry loads of food items to women and youths across the 16 Local Government Areas of Kwara State.

A statement by the state Peoples Democratic Party’s Publicity Secretary, Rex Olawoye, on Saturday, said the food items were handed over to the state Chairman of the party, Iyiola Oyedepo and his executive members.

Olawoye said there was pervading poverty in the state, adding that the items would help in reducing the hardship suffered by the people.

He expressed gratitude to the First Lady for the gesture, while assuring her of fair distribution of the items. Continue.

Boko Haram fighters cut my neighbours’ throats – Cameroonian

Cameroon said Friday its army killed 107 Boko Haram fighters, while a police officer told AFP at least 30 civilians were murdered by the Islamist guerrilla group before the ambush.The combat occurred Wednesday and Thursday after militants from the Nigeria-based Boko Haram drove into the border towns of Amchide and Limani, Cameroon’s defence ministry said in a statement read on state radio.Officials said eight Cameroonian soldiers died in the battle, which the ministry called “fighting of rare violence”.It was not possible to independently verify the information or the toll.Boko Haram rebels, who have been waging attacks in northern Nigeria and who kidnapped more than 200 school girls in April, frequently cross into neighbouring Cameroon.A police officer speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity said that before the military confronted them, the Boko Haram fighters “cut the throats of many civilians, 30 at least”. Boko Haram to release 218 Chibok girls Monday

There are strong indications that the 218 schoolgirls abducted six months ago in Chibok, Borno State, by the violent Boko Haram sect may be released on Monday following a ceasefire agreement between the sect and the Federal Government.

The Federal Government, through the Nigerian military, had on Friday said that it had agreed to a ceasefire with the violent sect and that the Chibok girls would soon be released.

The deal was announced by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh.

The military has struggled to defeat Boko Haram sect which began attack against Nigeria since 2009.

The Islamist militant group sparked global outrage six months ago by abducting more than 200 girls from the town of Chibok. Continue...

FG to spend N1trn on petrol subsidy in 2015

The Federal Government is to spend the sum of N971 billion to subsidise the supply of petrol to Nigerians in 2015, an indication that the administration has no plan to do away with subsidising petrol. In the same vein, the government plans to give out N260 million to the Subsidy Reinvestment Programme, SURE-P, for intervention in various development agencies, while N250 billion would be spent as subsidy on kerosene. This is contained in the 2015-2017 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy, MTEF paper, which President Goodluck Jonathan sent to the National Assembly for approval as the basis for the 2015 budget of N4.817.76 trillion

The Senate President, Senator David Mark has already directed the Joint Committee on Finance and Appropriation to work on the Paper within two weeks.

Senator Mark said the early conclusion of work on the document would enable the senate to determine early passage of the proposed 2015 budget. Continue...

A victim of the May 1, 2014 bomb blast in Nyanya, the Federal Capital Territory which left scores dead, has made a desperate call to Nigerians to save her life.

The victim, Mrs. Monica Solomon, who is at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, needs at least N5.3m for plastic surgeries overseas

Although skin grafting was carried out on Monica’s hands last week, she is still far from full recovery as Nigerian hospitals lacked equipment to carry out a successful plastic surgery on her face.

Monica’s husband, Adebosin, said, “The skin grafting surgery carried out on her hands were successful and we thank the Almighty God for that; but the doctors in Gwagwalada said they can’t perform the plastic surgery which they estimated will cost about N5.3 million, except my wife is flown out of the country.”

He therefore pleaded with Nigerians, and the governments of Kogi and Kaduna states to come to their aid. Continue...

Coroner visits Synagogue, demands lodgers’ list

The coroner investigating the cause of the September 12 Synagogue building collapse has demanded for the list of the people lodging in the building prior to the accident.

This demand was made on Thursday during a visit to the site of the collapsed building by the coroner, Magistrate O. A. Komolafe.

Komolafe, who made the demand, said the list would be an important complement to the work of the pathologists in identifying the corpses. “We want to be able to identify all the victims, because those bodies will not be released to their relatives if we cannot identify them. “They will be given mass burial, which is not appropriate,” Komolafe said. Danagogo summons NFF over foreign coach

Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr. Tammy Danagogo yesterday said that he has summoned the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick and his board to explain why they have decided to hire a foreign coach for the Super Eagles.

The NFF board rose from its late night meeting on Wednesday to announce a wide range of decisions including hiring of a foreign coach and the sacking of Coach Stephen Keshi.

In the interim, Coach Amodu Shuaibu who had in the past handled the team was named as the replacement of Keshi for the two remaining matches of the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) championship coming up in Morocco. Continue..

1000 B-Haram members nabbed in S-West – Serki Hausawa

Alhaji Sani Kabir, yesterday, told the Federal Government that northerners in the South West have arrested more than 1,000 members of the Boko Haram insurgents in parts of the South West.Speaking when the Arewa Council of Chiefs in the South West paid a visit to the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Alhaji Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, in Abuja, Alhaji Kabir said the arrests were made at different times. He said that those arrested were Boko Haram members who fled from the Civilian JTF/military onslaught on the insurgents in the North East and those who came to the South West to further the insurgency.Kabir said the Council has taken it upon itself to ensure that Boko Haram did not take root in the South West because according to him, such a development would complicate the security challenges facing Nigeria. Man rapes, infects lover’s kids with HIV

A 32-year-old man, Mr. Terkura Iorpuu, was on Thursday arraigned before a chief magistrate’s court in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, for raping and infecting two young girls with HIV.

The two victims, aged eight and six, were the daughters of his lover, Mrs. Mson Tor.

Both the rapist and the mother of the two minors had been HIV positive for over a year and had been using anti-retroviral drugs.

It was learnt that the bubble burst after the kids started walking in an unusual manner and were subsequently taken to Hemko Hospital, Makurdi for medical examination.

After the test, it was discovered that the girls had been defiled through “forceful penetration”.

Medical examination also showed that the two sisters were HIV positive.

The victims, when interviewed, revealed that it was their mother’s boyfriend that raped them.

The magistrate, Lilian Tsumba, adjourned till December 4 for further mentioning and ordered that the accused be remanded in prison.

Health workers under the aegis of Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals on Thursday expressed joy following the resignation of the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, to pursue his 2015 governorship ambition in Ebonyi State.

They also blamed him for the underdevelopment of the nation’s health sector.

Oritsejafor: Okotie laughs off CAN’s response

The Founder, Household of God Church, Rev. Chris Okotie, has laughed off the response of the Christian Association of Nigeria to his call for the resignation of CAN president, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, over the alleged involvement of his aircraft in the controversial $9.3m smuggled into South Africa by two Nigerians and an Israeli.

While reacting to the demand by Okotie that Oritsejafor should resign as president of CAN, the association asked him to manage his home and keep to biblical principle of one man, one wife.

In a statement by its Director of National Issues, Mr. Sunny Oibe, CAN said Okotie was looking for popularity through Oritsejafor, and advised him to go and sort himself out.

In his response via an email, Okotie said it was clear that the complicated deal was shrouded.

Okotie said, “I will not nobilitate such prosaic apologetic by a retort. Socrates once said to a young man, ‘Speak that I might see thee’.

“Now that CAN has spoken, even team Jonathan has spoken. Nigerians can now fully visualise the portrait of complicity shrouded in duplicity. Truth is never out of kilter. Hahaha!”

US denies reports on refusal to sell arms to Nigeria

The United States of America’s envoy to Nigeria, Ambassador James Entwistle, has denied reports that the US has refused to sell arms to Nigeria on account of human rights violation in the fight against insurgency in the country.

Entwistle, who was speaking as a guest at the Diplomatic Dialogue Series organised by the Nigeria Leadership Initiative, NLI said the US has not cut off Nigeria militarily and that the two countries continue to enjoy healthy military relationship.He insisted that his remark on arms sale to Nigeria recently was misrepresented and that there was never a time he said the US will not sell arms to Nigeria on account of human rights violations.According to him, “Nigeria and the US have a military relationship that continues. The Allied Congress Party of Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to make the economy very attractive through job creation, saying such would discourage the emigration of youths to Dubai, where he said many Nigerian graduates had turned to drivers and cooks.

Spain sets up Ebola crisis committee

Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy has set up a special committee to deal with the impact of Europe’s first case of Ebola.

Rajoy admitted that the situation was “complex and difficult”, but stressed that the government had a clear plan of what needed to be done. Spanish nurse Teresa Romero is said to be gravely ill, after catching the haemorrhagic fever while caring for patients brought from West Africa.

Four injured in Abuja crash

Four persons are receiving treatment at the National Hospital, Abuja, after sustaining injuries in an auto accident involving a Peugeot 407 and two painted Abuja taxis.

Cpl Atoo Akaana, an Investigation Police Officer attached to the Wuse Zone 3 Police Station said Saturday that the accident occurred around 6.30 a.m. along Wuse Market, FCT.

Akaana said the Peugeot 407 which was coming from the Mabushi expressway to Wuse, lost control before the bridge, close to the market and hit two taxis that were wrongly parked on the road.

He said that the four persons rushed to the hospital sustained various degrees of injuries.

“ I have called officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to come and evacuate the vehicles,” he said. Continue...

Day 1 was kidnapped with 4 Dutch Nationals

On the 5th of May 2014, Executive Director and Founder of the Hope for Niger Delta Campaign (HNDC) and Environmental Activist, Comrade Sunny Ofehe and four other Dutch nationals, Erhard Leffers, Jandries Groenendijk, Miss Marianne Vos and Femi Soewu were kidnapped in the creeks of the Niger Delta, Bayelsa state to be precise when they visited the Idodo River community to do a documentary film on a hospital project in the community. One person was shot dead during the kidnap operation.

Though Ofehe who is based in the Netherlands was released 24 hours after the kidnap his Dutch friends were not that lucky as they spent six days in the creeks. Saturday Vanguard observed that their abduction almost pitched the activist against the Dutch Government following the insinuation that he could have hand in the kidnap. That was the insinuation of a segment of the Dutch media when the incident happened and it became a big problem for the family of the activist in Rotterdam.

Truck driver turn Amuwo-Ago link road into new death trap

Users of the Amuwo-Ago link road have called on Lagos State governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola to urgently arrest the menace of articulated truck drivers who have turned the road into the latest death trap in the state, by indiscriminately parking on both sides of the road.The urgency of their concerns was aptly captured on Wednesday, September 7, 2014 when a Lexus SUV GX470, with special registration number BOILER, rammed into a truck attempting to make a U turn at the ICAN bus stop along the Amuwo end of the road The gruesome accident killed the driver of the SUV death and left the car in carcass.For those who summoned the courage to approach the scene of the accident it was a gory sight as flesh of the mangled SUV driver littered the scene of the accident. Boko Haram: 10 Chinese workers, 17 others freed

Cameroon’s president has said that 27 hostages, including 10 Chinese workers, held by suspected Boko Haram militants have been released. Also freed was the wife of Cameroon’s Vice-Prime Minister Amadou Ali. President Paul Biya said that the hostages, seized in May and July close to the Nigeria border, were safe. Boko Haram is seeking to establish an Islamist state in Nigeria but its fighters often cross the long and porous border with Cameroon. The woman in the eye of the storm, Ijimo Ibrahim, a hairdresser, was still finding it difficult to explain her situation to police investigators at the Department of Criminal Investigation of the Ogun State Police Command, Eleweran, Abeokuta, when our correspondent visited on Wednesday. The police wanted to know how her lover died and how his body got to a roadside in the dead of the night.

Ibrahim, who was never married, has two children with two other men. Sitting on the floor with agony etched on her face, Ibrahim narrated how her lover, who was married to another woman, died.

“He only came for sex in the mornings so that his wife would not suspect,” the fair complexioned woman said, as her face revealed that she would prefer not to relive the sordid details of the affair.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company, EKEDC, has blamed the delay in the rolling out of prepaid meters to consumers on the fear of bye-pass of its meters. The company’s Vice President, Legal, Mrs. Wola Ojoye, who spoke during a courtesy visit by members of the Consumer Rights Advancement Organisation, CRADO, led by Chief Deolu Ogunbanjo, at the EKEDC corporate headquarters in Marina, Lagos, said that bye-passing of payment for electricity consumed was evident mostly with prepaid meters.She said this fear has been responsible for the company’s inability to distribute the 9,000 prepaid meters it inherited from the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, when it took over on November 1, 2013, adding that these meters go into negative after consumption of electricity already paid for by the consumers. Thugs attack govt officials as Jonathan visits Edo

There was a mild drama on Friday at the Benin Airport when suspected thugs nearly marred the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to Edo State for the official foundation-laying ceremony of a $1bn Independent Power Plant in Uhumwode Local Government Area of the state.

The suspected thugs, numbering over 30, were said have stormed the airport, chanting abusive songs against the state Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, who was at the airport to receive Jonathan.

The thugs, who also carried placards and posters of a Peoples Democratic Party lawmaker, who was attacked by suspected thugs on Tuesday night, were said to have allegedly assaulted some senior officials of the Edo State Government, including the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, and Chief of Staff to the Governor, Patrick Obahiagbon.

It was gathered that some chiefs and members of the Peoples Democratic Party, who were also at the venue to receive the president, were however left untouched.

The disruption was said to have lasted for several minutes before the combined efforts of soldiers and policemen at the scene were able to disperse the thugs and restore normalcy.

Blatter calls for end to away goals rule

Belarus: 100 football fans detained over anti-Putin song

More than 100 football fans have been detained in Belarus after nearly the entire stadium joined in chanting a well-known song insulting Russian President Vladimir Putin, media reports say.

Both local and visiting fans at the Euro 2016 qualifier between Ukraine and Belarus in Borisov came together in a rousing rendition of the song – which has became a popular expression of opposition to Putin in Ukraine, the Belarusian paper Nasha Niva reports.

Belarusian fans are also heard voicing their solidarity with their Ukrainian counterparts by chanting the signature slogan of the Maidan protests in Kiev – Slava Ukrayini (“Glory to Ukraine”).

Accountant escapes jail in N1.9bn subsidy fraud case

An Ikeja High Court on Friday discharged an accountant, Ezekiel Ejidele, who was tried for complicity in a N1.9bn fuel subsidy fraud. Justice Lateefat Okunnu discharged Ejidele, an employee of Akintola Williams Delloite, after upholding his no-case submission application.

The  Ejidele was charged alongside two oil marketers — Walter Wagbatsoma and Adaoha Ugo-Ndagi. Also charged with them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is Fakuade Babafemi, a staff member of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Authority.

They are facing a nine counts of conspiracy, obtaining property by false pretences, forgery and altering. The defendants had all filed their respective no-case submission applications, urging the court to discharge them. Continue..
