Okonjo-Iweala bags African Finance Minister of the year award

The Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Friday bagged the African Finance Minister of the year award for her outstanding performance as a finance minister.The award was presented to her by the African Investor Magazine on the sideline of the ongoing annual meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington DC.She thanked the organisers for the award and described it as an absolute honour and auspicious.She called on all investors in Africa to join the fight against the deadly Ebola virus disease that is ravaging some countries in West Africa.“What is happening in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra-Leone and the success we had in Nigeria and Senegal in containing this virus should not be allowed to set Africa back.“You as private sector and friends of Africa need to send the message that we should not be so afraid of Ebola that we stigmatise the whole continent. White House Hotel boss - Nigeria should reward Adadevoh

The President of the White House Hotel, Ikeja, Mr. Austin Eruotor, has called on the government and other relevant bodies to reward the late Dr. Stella Adadevoh posthumously.

Adadevoh was the doctor that restrained the Liberian that brought Ebola to Nigeria, the late Patrick Sawyer, when she treated her in Lagos.

She contracted the disease – after she had battled hard to restrain Sawyer from leaving First Consultant Hospital, Obalende. According to Eruotor, God used Adadevoh to minimise the Ebola scare in Nigeria. Continue..

Residents of Erukun community in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, were jolted over the weekend after detectives stormed the area and arrested suspected members of a syndicate that hide under the cover of spiritualists to swindle unsuspecting members of the public.

At the end of the operation which lasted for hours, 11 members of the syndicate including four women whose ages range between 35 and 52 years, were reportedly arrested in three buildings located inside the forest. Boldly written in front of one of the buildings is the inscription; Heritage Naturalist Car Limited a.k.a Isese Ajogunba. The US-based website, Richest Lifestyle, which listed President Goodluck Jonathan as Africa’s sixth richest president has retracted the publication.

Richest Lifestyle had ranked Jonathan alongside King Mswati III of Swaziland, stating that both African leaders were worth $100m (N16.5 bn) in the publication titled “Africa’s Richest Presidents 2014. ”Following the publication, the President had threatened to institute a legal action against the publishers of the online magazine, stating that the ranking lacked “factual basis.”

Union Bank Boss calls for proactive strategies against e-fraud

Travellers from Ebola-affected countries will face increased security scrutiny at five major US airports. Passengers from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea will have their temperatures taken and have to answer questions. The new measures at O’Hare in Chicago, JFK and Newark in the New York area, Washington’s Dulles, and Atlanta’s airport will begin in the coming days.

The Ebola outbreak has already killed more than 3,000 people and infected more than 7,200, mostly in West Africa. The increase in passenger testing comes after the first person diagnosed with Ebola on US soil died in Dallas on Wednesday. Thomas Duncan travelled to the US from Liberia, and was only diagnosed with the disease once he arrived in Texas. A police officer who visited Duncan’s home is now reported to have Ebola-like symptoms and has been taken to hospital as a precaution.

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said India would make it "unaffordable" for Pakistan if the attacks continued. These are the strongest comments yet from India's government on the recent escalation of tension. At least 19 people have been reportedly killed as troops continue to exchange fire in some of the worst violence in the disputed region in a decade. Of those killed since violence began last Friday, 11 are on the Pakistani side while eight are on the Indian side.

Both sides have accused each other of starting the hostilities. A ceasefire agreed in 2003 remains in place, but the nuclear-armed neighbours often accuse each other of violating it.

Shannon Leah Fraser stumbled out of the bush on Wednesday morning, reported local media. The 30-year-old had gone to the Golden Hole swimming spot with two men, including her partner, when she disappeared on 21 September. She is now recovering in a hospital and is being treated for infected cuts and severe sunburn. Ms Fraser's companions first raised the alarm after she got separated from them and failed to return to their vehicle, said Queensland Police. The mother-of-three's disappearance sparked a search operation involving 25 officers from the police and state emergency services. Divers combed the pond while officers searched the area on foot and quad bikes. Helicopter searches were conducted as well, with search teams dropping coloured markers.

According to the International Monetary Fund, IMF, China has overtaken the United States as the world’s largest economy. The IMF estimates that the size of the US economy is $17.4tr, while the Chinese economy comes in at $17.6tr, Business Insider reports. China’s share of the global economy is 16.48 per cent, while the United States accounts for 16.28 per cent, the IMF said Tuesday as part of its outlook for the world economic growth.
These figures are adjusted for the relative costs of living in both countries, known as “purchasing power parity.”

Nigerian passengers cancel US, Europe trips over Ebola

The spread of the Ebola Virus Disease to the United States and some European countries has forced many Nigerian travellers to cancel their flights to some of the affected countries. This is even as health and immigration officials at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos have been ordered to properly screen passengers coming into the country from the affected countries. The European countries of Spain and Norway have recorded cases of Ebola, with medical workers outside a hospital in Spain protesting over suspected cases of the disease. Investigation by our correspondent revealed that some passengers billed to travel from Nigeria had been cancelling their flights over renewed fears of the deadly disease. Mrs. Tope Philips, who was booked to travel on Delta Air flight to the US on Monday, cancelled the booking and opted to go to a Far East country for her vacation.

“Ebola is very deadly and it is better to stay away and prevent it as much as possible. I will go to the Far East, maybe Jordan or Qatar, for my annual vacation and visit the US maybe next year. It is too dicey to take a risk now,” she said. Continue...

Super Eagles Head Coach Stephen Keshi yesterday warned that he will not be interested in talking about out-of-favour striker, Ikechukwu Uche who is yet to play for the national team since after the 2013 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) win. The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Wednesday said Nigeria had already donated $3.5m as part of its intervention in the affected countries.

Chukwu said the sum was made up of $500,000 to each of the countries and the balance to the common ECOWAS Fund for the disease.

He also said 591 health practitioners had volunteered to join the international force that would go to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to help in the containment of the Ebola Virus Disease.

He said the volunteers registered with his ministry at three points in Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt.

Chukwu said this while speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said that he had already told a recent meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on EVD of Nigeria’s readiness to help the three countries. Continue...

Nigerian threatens South Africa over ‘frozen’ weapons deal

Nigeria on Wednesday accused South Africa of blocking a legal arms purchase and threatened retaliation against major South African companies, including telecom giant MTN, if the spat is not resolved.A top official in the office of Nigeria’s National Security Advisor (NSA) told AFP that the country had an agreement to buy $5.7 million (4.5 million euros) worth of military hardware in a deal brokered by a South African firm.The official, who asked that his name be withheld, said Pretoria had frozen cash that had been wired to the South African firm’s account.South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority made no immediate comment, but the asset freeze has been widely reported in both Nigerian and South African media. The first person to be diagnosed with Ebola within the US has died, Texas hospital officials have said. Thomas Duncan, who caught the virus in his native Liberia, was being kept in isolation in a Dallas hospital and receiving experimental drugs.

Earlier the US announced new security procedures at entry points to check travellers for symptoms of the virus. More than 3,000 people have died in West Africa in the worst Ebola outbreak yet.

While Duncan was the first person to be diagnosed within the US, three American aid workers and a photojournalist contracted the virus in Liberia. Continue...

Eleven states resume today after forced Ebola holidays

Schools in at least 11 states of the country are set to resume a new academic session today (Wednesday) after a forced holiday occasioned by the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak.

The states which had earlier shunned the September 22 resumption date announced by the Federal Government, picked October 8, as a more realistic resumption date to enable them to put in place the logistics required to prevent the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease and also observe the Eid-el-Kabir holiday. Some of the states commencing academic activities today include Rivers, Benue, Lagos, Ekiti and Oyo. Others are Kano, Kogi, Akwa -Ibom, Ebonyi, Ogun and Kwara states. Continue..

UN appoints special representative in Côte d’Ivoire

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday announced the appointment of Mr Simon Munzu as his Deputy Special Representative of UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI).

The appointment of Munzu, a Cameroonian, is contained in a statement issued by the Secretary-General’s Spokesperson, Stephane DuJarric, in New York.

The statement said Munzu will succeed Arnauld Akodjènou of Benin, who now serves as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali. Continue....

At least 14 people were killed as protests by pro-Kurdish demonstrators raged across Turkey over the government’s lack of action to save the Syrian town of Kobane, officials said Wednesday.

The violence was concentrated in the mainly Kurdish southeast but also flared in Istanbul, Ankara and other cities, where demonstrators clashed with police in the most serious pro-Kurdish rioting in years. Twitter sues US government over spying

Twitter has sued the US government over surveillance laws. Under current regulations, Twitter cannot reveal certain information about government requests for users’ data relating to national security. Twitter argues that this violates the right to free speech, as defined by the First Amendment to the US Constitution. The firm said it brought the case in an effort to force the government to be more transparent about personal data requests. “It’s our belief that we are entitled under the First Amendment to respond to our users’ concerns and to the statements of US government officials by providing information about the scope of US government surveillance,” Twitter’s lawyer, Ben Lee, wrote in a blog post. Ijeoma, wife of Chiamaka Dominic, one of the two victims of the May 1, 2014 bomb blast in Nyanya, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Tuesday said her husband died after doctors complained that his blood level was too low.

Dominic died on Sunday night at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, where he had been receiving treatment. His death came barely two weeks after a surgery was carried out on one of his legs. Continue..

Nigeria has 48 million active Internet users -NITDA

Nigeria’s active internet users currently stands at over 48 million, Dr Peter Jack, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has said.

A statement issued by NITDA’s Head of Public Affairs, Mrs Hadiza Umar in Abuja on Tuesday, stated that Jack made the assertion in a speech at the global media meet in Dubai.

The meeting was preparatory to the Global Information Technology Exhibition Week 2014.

Jack said, “In Nigeria, with over 48 million regular internet users, various activities are being carried out online. “We are currently measuring the impact of the plan and implementation level in preparation for review next year.

“ICT contributes over 8 per cent to the Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product and is now growing at 7 per cent annually. Continue....

Between January and September this year, oil marketers in the country made not less than N148.5bn illegal profit on Dual Purpose Kerosene sold to Nigerians.

Officially, the DPK is meant to be sold at N50 per litre, but this has not been the case as consumers have continued to buy the product at N100 and above per litre.

Daily supply of kerosene to the market is put at 11 million litres by the Petroleum Products Marketing Company, which implies that over N550m illegitimate profit is made by oil marketers daily on the product at a retail price of N100 per litre.

By implication, over N16.5bn abnormal profit is made every month, meaning that between January and September this year, a total of N148.5bn would have been dubiously made by marketers across the country. Continue......

Three people were killed, while seven remain out of contact, following a gas outburst in a southwest China colliery, local authorities said on Tuesday. The accident happened at around 7 p.m. Sunday at the Xintian Coal Mine in Qianxi County, Guizhou Province. A gas outburst occurred in a mine pit, where 134 people were working, according to initial investigations. Rescuers managed to pull 126 out of the groove, with 13 of them injured. Two of the injured died after emergency treatment failed.

As of 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, firefighters have found one body out of the missing eight. Rescue efforts for the remaining seven are still under way. The colliery, which is under the Yonggui Energy Development Co. Ltd, has an annual capacity of 600,000 tonnes.

W’Bank cuts China growth forecast for next three years

The World Bank has cut China’s growth forecast for the next three years as the country tackles structural reforms. rowth in the world’s second-largest economy will fall to 7.4 per cent from a previous estimate of 7.6 per cent, it said.

“In China, growth will gradually slow, as efforts to address financial vulnerabilities and structural constraints increase,” the lender said.

Growth in 2015 will go down to 7.2 per cent and then 7.1 per cent in 2016 from a previous forecast of 7.5 per cent for both years. Continue..

The former Real Madrid, Chelsea and PSV Eindhoven star has announced he plans to build a museum to house all his memorabilia in his own home once he calls time on an illustrious career.

‘When my wife and I are settled in our house, I dream of collecting all my things and building a private museum. It will be for me, my family and my close friends,’ the Dutch international told Bild.

‘I have so many souvenirs – shirts of other players. I kept the ball from the 2013 Champions League final (Bayern beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 and Robben scored a late winner).

‘There are boots that I have worn at European Championships and World Cups. The idea is to pull everything together so that nothing is lost.’
