Esama of Benin, Sir Gabriel Igbinedion will turn 80 on September 11th and a month long celebration which will stretch around three continents has kicked off in Benin. Colourful activities to mark his birthday started in Benin last week and today he went to University of Ibadan for the launch of his biography written by four professors from University's department of History. It's said to be the first honour of its kind by UI. From Ibadan, the party will move to South Africa, then there's a party in London and the US.

The Esama is said to have ordered a new wonder ride to celebrate this milestone. Continue...

Striker Obafemi Martins was on target twice for Seattle Sounders in their 4-2 away win against Chivas USA in an American MLS match played at the StubHub Center on Wednesday night.

Christian Mothers in Mgbishii, a rural community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area in Imo state have cried out to the government and the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiatical Province, Dr. Anthony Obinna, over alleged atrocities being committed by their sons and daughters in the area.

Chris Oyakhilome, who is currently in divorce court with his estranged wife Anita Oyakhilome has denied adultery accusations and has threatened to sue journalists who publish stories about himself and his wife. In a statement released via his lawyer Mr. Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) a few hours ago, Pastor Oyakhilome said the accusations of adultery against him is 'false and malicious'.

"The attention of our client, Rev. Chris Oyakhilome, and the church has been drawn to the wave of false, malicious and fabricated stories being published in the print and electronic media about his person, the church and a matrimonial cause between him and his wife," his attorney stated. Thousands of youths who thronged to the streets in Maiduguri on Thursday to protest the siege of the Boko Haram sect on Borno State have expressed their willingness to go after the terrorist group.

Sex Therapist, pastor Funmi Akingbade says the average Nigerian man is not the most patient lover. In an interview with City People magazine, pastor Akingbade said Nigerian men see foreplay and other activities before intercourse as a waste of time. She says to have a bliss marital life, great sex must be incorporated and that the woman should not be seen as an object just to 'release' into.

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has invited El-Kanemi goalkeeper David Obiazor for the 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo on Saturday after permission from captain Vincent Enyeama.

The Ondo State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, has said that the state government has directed the state’s Teaching Service Commission to begin the recruitment of 2,000 teachers into its schools.

Briefing newsmen on the development on Tuesday, Akinmade said the exercise was part of government’s efforts to create gainful employment and improve the standard of education in the state.

There was confusion on Tuesday on whether or not the outlawed Boko Haram sect had overrun Bama, a town 70 kilometres from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

While Rueters news agency quoted security sources as saying that the members of the sect had overrun much of the town after hours of fighting on Monday night and early hours of Tuesday, the Deputy Governor of the state, Zannah Mustapha, and the Civilian Joint Task Force dismissed the report as false. According to multiple eye witnesses, the Super Eagles midfielder arrived at the Eagles Calabar camp this afternoon wearing protective hand gloves. Nurses at Liberia’s largest hospital went on strike on Monday, demanding better pay and equipment to protect them against a deadly Ebola epidemic which has killed hundreds in the West African nation.

Spokesman for the strikers at Monrovia’s John F Kennedy hospital, John Tugbeh, said the nurses would not return to work until they are supplied with “personal protective equipment”, the hazmat-style suits which guard against infectious diseases. Continue..

He Independent National Electoral Commission on Monday in Abuja said that voters who did not collect their Permanent Voter Cards by December 2014, “would be disenfranchised in the 2015 general elections.”

The commission also called on Nigerians not to lose hope in its ability to deliver free, fair and credible elections in 2015.

Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State on Monday warned his predecessor, Orji Uzor Kalu, against persecuting his administration through the use of his newspaper.

Customers on Monday dumped the use of other banks’ Automated Teller Machines in a bid to avoid paying the newly introduced N65 ATM fee, which became effective that day.

The Central Bank of Nigeria, in collaboration with the Bankers’ Committee, had on August 13, 2014 announced the introduction of the N65 service fee on cash withdrawals from other banks’ ATMs.

The re-introduction of the fee came almost two years after the CBN and the Deposit Money Banks cancelled the N100 ATM charge in December 2012. Continue...

NDLEA arrests 4,511 drug suspects in six months

Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mr Ahmadu Giade, said on Sunday that the agency arrested a total of 4,511 suspected drug traffickers and 47,422.678 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs between January and June 2014.

Army repels Boko Haram attack, kills 59 in Bama

At least 59 members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect were killed on Monday, as the Nigerian military repelled an attack by the sect to expand its caliphate to include Bama town, Borno State.

It would be recalled that the sect had last week declared a caliphate in Gwoza, a town 135km from Maiduguri, and may be aiming to get further mileage towards Maiduguri. Continue....
