August heavy rainfall good for farmers – NiMet
General Manager, Climate Services, Nigerian Metrological Agency, Mr. Joseph Alozie, on Friday said that the heavy rainfall recorded since the beginning of August would increase farm yields in 2014.
Alozie made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.

Ebola: CAF stands firm on Nations Cup venues
The Confederation of African Football has declared there will be no further changes to September’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers despite some relocation requests over Ebola fears.
It stated on its website: “Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia remain the only countries required to relocate their fixtures to neutral territories as a result of the situation of the Ebola virus.”

Malaysia Airlines is to cut 6,000 staff as part of recovery plan after being hit by two disasters this year.
The reduction in staff numbers represents around 30 per cent of its workforce of 20,000.

Insurgents take over Madagali Catholic church house
The Catholic Church on Thursday complained that Boko Haram insurgents had taken over the parish church house as well as houses of Christians in Madagali, Adamawa State.
Madagali town is the headquarters of the Madagali Local Government Area and it shares border with Borno State. It is also the closest town to Gwoza, the town that Boko Haram has already annexed.
The church, in an electronic press statement by the Director, Catholic Social Communications in-charge of the Maiduguri Diocese, Rev. Fr. Over 20,000 people may contract Ebola – WHO
The World Health Organisation has raised fresh alarm that over 20,000 people are at risk of contracting the Ebola Virus Disease going by the exponential effect of the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
The WHO in a terse statement in Geneva on Thursday stated that so far, 1,552 persons have died of Ebola and called on various governments to deploy strategies towards containing the deadly disease.
It noted that over 120 health care workers have died in the Ebola outbreak, and twice that number have been infected. Continue...

THE police in Niger State on Thursday stopped a rally by members of the All Progressives Congress. The rally had been meant to boost the chances of the APC candidate, David Umaru, in the Niger-East senatorial bye-election.
Members of the APC were locked out of the Minna Polo ground venue of the rally by men of the Niger State police command, who stormed the venue in 10 Toyota Hilux vans.

Lack of electricity threatens Nigeria’s destiny – Minister
The common destiny of Nigerians is being threatened by the lack of electricity, the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, has said.
Nebo stated that with the increasing population in the country, there was the need for reinforcement of forces to avert the looming threat to Nigeria’s future as a result of inadequate power supply.

NAFDAC seized contraband products in Kano
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has sealed off seven shops and confiscated contraband food products worth millions of Naira in Kano.
The NAFDAC Assistant Director (Enforcement), Mr. Shaba Mohammed, disclosed this in Kano on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

57-year-old man in remand for stealing mosquito net
A 57-year-old man, Lawrence Isidor, has been remanded for two weeks after he was alleged to have stolen a mosquito net belonging to one Mrs. Gracious Odo, a resident on Marble Street, Happy Land Estate in the Ajah area of Lagos State.
It was learnt that the defendant slapped the woman when she accused him of stealing the net.

A former House of Representatives member, Otunba Dino Melaye has urged President Goodluck Jonathan, to name a Federal Government owned hospital after the late Ameyo Adadevoh because of her gallant role in helping to curtail the spread of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria.
